The Makino Hyper2J ultra-high accuracy micromachining center was created, designed and built to meet the extremely rigorous machining needs in the manufacturing of precise and detailed parts, including: medical instruments, biotechnology products, semiconductor devices, fiber optical communications and optical products, such as liquid crystal displays and spherical lenses. The vertically-oriented machine achieves accuracies and surface finishes that have been previously unattainable. Equipped with an 0.000019 inch (0.5 nanometer) scale feedback and built to exacting alignments, the Makino Hyper2J boasts a positioning accuracy of ±0.3 microns (±0.000012 inch), with a repeatability accuracy of ±0.2 microns (±0.0000078 inch). With an X-, Y- and Z-axis travel of 7.87 x 5.9 x 5.9 inches (200 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm), the Hyper2J can handle up to an 88 pound (40kg) workpiece on a work table size of 11.8 x 7.87 inches (300 x 200 mm).

Additional Information
Low-vibration, direct-chucking spindle
Makino HYPER2J | Micromachining
  • Spindle speed range: 3000 ~ 40000 min¹
  • Spindle outer diameter of 25mm accommodates 6 mm dia. straight tools
  • Spindle cooling by automatic spindle lubricant temperature controller
Operator-friendly design for outstanding operating easeMakino HYPER2J
Accessibility has been enhanced to satisfy the needs of research institutes and prototyping shops where the operator has to check the machined surface of the workpiece on the table and the cutting tool as machining proceeds. The operator has unobstructed access to the spindle and the workpiece from three sides, ensuring excellent accessibility and visibility.

Machine construction for high accuracy combined with fast feedrates
All axes adopt meticulously finished guides with six restrained faces that work in concert with high machine rigidity to deliver superb accuracy. Measures have also been taken to avoid the effects of heat generated by the feed motors and feed screws in each axis, enabling the HYPER2J to provide submicron machining accuracy. Additionally, the granite base below the machine reduces the influence of floor vibration and temperature changes.

High-speed spindle with minimal vibration for high accuracy  Makino HYPER2J
A low-vibration, 40,000 rpm-1 high-speed spindle is standard on the HYPER2J. A 170,000 rpm-1 spindle is also available as an optional specification that generates less cutting heat to facilitate ultrafine machining.

2-nm scale feedback system
A high-performance 2-nm scale feedback system is available as an option in each axis to enable even finer machine movements. With a minimum increment of 10 nm, this optional feature facilitates exceptionally fine positioning and additional micromachining.

Makino Hyper2J micromachining Machine installation on a granite base
Benefits of a granite base:

  • Outstanding isolation of vibration from the floor
(Granite reduces vibration to one-half the level of cast iron.)
  • Prevents ambient temperature changes from affecting the machine
(Granite’s thermal conductivity is only 1/10-1/20 that of cast iron.)
