Mason, OH - September 2000 - The A88E high-speed horizontal machining center, the latest addition to Makino’s highly advanced line of A-Series machining centers, offers the perfect chip control solution for its 24.8" (630 mm) square pallet. A high rate of metal removal is combined with excellent chip control and its center trough, chip conveyor and new axis covers greatly improve chip evacuation.
Engineered for high-speed machining of medium to large workpieces, including cast iron diesel blocks and heads, its 24.8" (630mm) square pallet has a maximum workzone of 39.4"d x 39.4"h (1,000 x 1,000mm) and accepts loads up to 2,640 lbs. (1,200kg). With x, y and z axis travels of 35.4 x 31.5 x 38.2" (900 x 800 x 970mm), the A88E has the largest z axis in the line, which includes the A55 Delta, A66, A77 and A99 machining centers.
The A88E’s unique column design positioned at different heights to reduce column weight for enhanced acceleration performance and core cooled ball screws allow cutting feedrates and rapid traverse rates of 1,968 ipm (50m/min.).
The A88E’s spindle brings a wide speed range to its applications—from 20 to 12,000 rpm. The 12,000 rpm spindle includes a standard 7/24 50 taper tool interface and can accelerate to 6,000 rpm in just 1.6 seconds. To enhance machining performance even further, an HSK-A100 spindle is available, as well as an 18,000 rpm spindle option.
PC Capabilities for Real Time Monitoring of the Machine
A strength of the A88E is its PC capability resulting from the Makino PRO3 pc control option with the Fanuc Type 3 Intelligent Terminal integrated into the operator station. The PRO3 pc displays the familiar PRO3 operation screens on the PC display so no operator retraining is required.
"The PRO3 pc control with standard Ethernet connectivity offers real time monitoring of the machine, either on-site or remotely," said Jim Brown, controls and software manager at Makino. "It also is able to run an internet browser, display graphics and many other PC software applications."
The advanced maintenance software package included with the A-Series PRO3 pc—and featured at IMTS 2000—guides the operator through an easy-to-use graphic interface to simplify resolving machine problems. An HTML description of alarm codes is displayed when an alarm occurs bringing forth the source of a machining problem and guiding the operator through repair.
The PRO3 pc module includes a PC display and full keyboard. Hardware consists of a 333 MHz Pentium II processor with 120 MB of RAM and a 10 GB hard drive.
Makino’s GI is another A-Series standard. It permits high feedrates with measurably higher accuracy over entire part routines and with shorter total cycle times. Using "look ahead" algorithms, GI software predicts and compensates for machine dynamics providing unmatched feeds and accuracy.
Advanced Spindle Technology
The A88E’s spindle assembly features an integrated rotor/stator/spindle shaft for reduced vibration during high-speed operation, as well as faster acceleration and deceleration. Low spindle vibration improves machined surface quality and extends tool life. Heat dissipation is also less problematic with Makino’s advanced spindle core cooling system, a standard feature on all A-Series machines. It circulates a large volume of temperature controlled cooling oil through the center of the spindle to cool it directly from the inside. Additionally, under race lubrication circulates cooled oil through holes in the inner bearing races to lubricate the bearings. The adoption of this patented cooling and lubrication technology combined with core-cooled ball screws makes it possible to achieve greater rigidity, enhanced accuracy and faster machining speeds.
The A88E’s highly rigid bed allows the use of a three-point leveling system eliminates the need for a special foundation, allowing fast, economical installation and easy redeployment for manufacturing flexibility. The bed’s solid construction also assures precise squareness and straightness in every axis, even when loaded with the heaviest allowable workpieces.
Direct acting bearings withstand ultra-heavy loads and are supported by guideways, which are hand-scraped to a precision finish. Along with bed rigidity, these measures effectively prevent minute deflections caused by load shifts. In addition, special cooling enables superior precision by controlling the effects of thermal distortion in the bed and column.
The A88E is enhanced by innovations throughout the machine’s design to provide time, cost and efficiency benefits. Other examples include:
