Makino® Introduces New High‑Performing a800Z Five‑Axis Horizontal Machining Center

Master Complex Parts and Components with the a800Z, a Highly Rigid, High-Performance Horizontal Machining Center from Makino.

CHICAGO, IL September 12, 2022 – Makino Inc. has introduced another new high-performance machining center design: the a800Z. The new five-axis horizontal machining center expands upon the best features of the Makino nx-Series four-axis horizontal machining centers by fully integrating a “Z-type” fifth axis. The five-axis platform is factory-built to master today’s complex part geometries with minimal workholding setups and machining operations. The a800Z machining center will be an asset to part and component manufacturers serving market areas including semiconductor, aero structural, industrial equipment and automotive.

Well-designed Five-Axis Machine for Maximum Rigidity
The a800Z features a unique kinematic arrangement which minimizes the force path lengths through the spindle and the workpiece, efficiently transferring cutting loads and reactive forces into the machine’s three-point leveled bed. With its unparalleled system rigidity, the a800Z maximizes metal removal rates and perishable tool life.

Larger Capacity and Weight
The a800Z accommodates workpieces of up to Ø39.4” (Ø1,000mm) x 31.5” (800mm) high, with payload weights up to 2,200 pounds (1,000kg). The X- and Y-strokes are 50.4” (1,280mm) and 47.2” (1,200mm), respectively, with the Z-stroke ranging from 44.1” – 52.2” (1,120mm – 1,325mm), depending on rotary axes positioning. The a800Z has two direct-drive type rotary tables with unlimited 360° movement on the B-axis and 180° on the innovative ‘slant style’ C-axis unit. The machine’s design allows for a full array of workpiece positioning ranging from the pallet top sitting horizontal or parallel to the spindle centerline or anywhere between these two extremes.

Minimizes Thermal Growth to Create Greater Stability
As has long been Makino’s hallmark, all axes on the a800Z have closed-loop active temperature control as a standard feature. This design provides superior dimensional control and extends component life even in the most demanding production environments. The pallet size of the a800Z is 24.8” x 24.8” (630mm x 630mm). The agile platform of the a800Z allows for highly efficient machine movements with rapid rates for all linear axes of 2,362 inches per minute (60 meters per minute) and a B-axis rotation rapid rate of 18,000 degrees per minute.

Three Options: High power, High Torque and High Speed
The a800Z’s standard 10,000 RPM high--power spindle offers output capabilities of 74 HP (55 kW) peak power and 532 ft-lbs. (721 N-m) peak torque, ideal for wide-ranging material applications. An optional 8,000 RPM high-torque spindle is offered for customers machining rigid materials, such as ductile iron, various steel or titanium alloys. An optional 15,000 RPM high-speed spindle is available for high-efficiency aero structural and semiconductor equipment-related component machining. The standard tool changer magazine holds 60 tools in a fast-access ring-style arrangement, with an optional 187 tool magazine available for additional storage capacity.

Built-in Automation
The standard automatic pallet changer (APC) on the a800Z significantly increases machine utilization, allowing workholding fixture tending on one pallet while the other pallet’s workpiece is machined. The APC is fully integrated into the core of the a800Z, providing unparalleled ease of operation and system reliability.

The a800Z comes standard with our Fanuc-based Pro-6 CNC control, a user-friendly touch screen interface, advanced tool data management, and the patented Makino Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI.5) highspeed machining control system.

The Makino a800Z is the industry’s newest standard bearer in complex production parts machining.
