Machining speeds are increased by using higher frequency while simultaneously using lower current to improve surface finishes. The advancements on the HFG Generator also provide improvements in machining speeds even when the ultimate surface finishes are not required. As shown below, a 2.0” (50mm) thick H13 tool steel punch machined with a target surface finish of 10µin Ra (0.25µm Ra). The machining results from the HFG Generator provided a 5% reduction in machining time while providing a surface finish result of 8µin Ra (0.20µm Ra) using four pass machining.

UXi Series Features

The Makino UXi Series wire EDM machines feature enhancements to provide greater accuracy. The machines feature an internal radiator cooling system to provide better thermal stability for the machine casting. This system works together with a high accuracy chiller unit that maintains a constant temperature within a range of ±0.1ºC. This prevents extreme temperature fluctuations that can affect machining accuracies. The UXi also includes a higher flatness accuracy worktable providing improved static accuracy, and an auto seal plate shower that keeps the machine seal plate lubricated and cleaner.

As with all of Makino’s wire EDM machines, the UXi Series Hyper Drive Extreme Wire Guide System, driven by an AC servo motor tensioning system, offers a host of benefits, including a broader range of wire tension settings and improved dynamic corner control. The consistent wire tension delivers precise and accurate results, even in complex cuts. The dynamic corner control is built-in to the machine cutting technology database providing improved straightness, size, and shape accuracy resulting in significantly improved corner accuracy.

The system’s jet-less threading capability allows for threading interrupted/hollow parts and those with extremely small start holes. Complimenting these capabilities is an enhanced auto-wire-threading system, which utilizes an advanced annealing process to help straighten the wire. This ensures reliable and consistent threading, providing manufacturers with confidence in the production of their products. In the event of a wire break, the Hyper Drive Extreme auto-wire-threading system also allows the operator to thread in the gap for specific applications. This can greatly reduce the recovery wire break processing time.
