The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme Wire Electrical Discharge Machine (Wire EDM) introduces a new and revolutionary technology using 0.016” (0.400mm) Ø coated wire to achieve the fastest machining speeds possible.  The technology is capable of more than doubling Rough Machining rates over traditional 0.010” (0.250mm) Ø brass wire without increasing wire consumption costs.  This is the largest increase in Wire EDM machining speed in decades, and represents a significant boost to productivity and manufacturing efficiency!

The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme machine contains several enhancements over the U6 H.E.A.T. machine, and the upgraded items include a higher power generator producing a 60 Amp output and the HyperDrive Extreme Automatic Wire Threading system.  The HyperDrive Extreme system features Makino’s 3rd Generation PICO Round Guide system that is specially designed for extremely low maintenance, and the system contains elements that ensure reliable Automatic Wire Threading…even when using 0.016” (0.4mm) Ø wire.

Technical Specifications

The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme machine is capable of producing the highest level of machining speed using 0.016” (0.4mm) Ø wire while maintaining the ability to operate with 0.004” (0.1mm) Ø wire.  The machine can operate with wire sizes from 0.004” to 0.016” (0.10.4mm) Ø, and is able to produce surface finishes down to 4µinRa (0.1µmRa) using the optional Crystal Machining fine finish circuit.  The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme includes Makino’s HyperCut technology for 0.008”/0.010”/0.012” (0.20, 0.25, 0.3mm) Ø wires, which are Precision-based settings that produce high accuracy and a very fine 16µinRa (0.4µmRa) surface finish with 3-Pass Machining (1 Rough Cut & 2 Skim Cuts).

Makino has applied years of development and put forth serious engineering effort to create the entire Machining Condition settings database designed completely for Low Wire Consumption.  This technology means that that the E-Settings for all wire diameter sizes and material types have been developed from their inception with and ideal and optimized mix of speed, accuracy, and surface finish capability while minimizing the amount of consumed wire.  This is a critical development item, as the wire consumption savings represents a significant long-term reduction in operational costs that improves efficiency and impacts profit by minimizing manufacturing expense.  Low Wire Consumption technology is also applied to 0.016” (0.4mm) Ø operations, as the wire consumption rate for this larger wire size is identical to traditional 0.010” (0.250mm) Ø consumption rate of 0.6 0.7 lbs. per hour (0.27 0.32 kg per hour).

The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme can transform your operations by achieving the worlds fastest machining speeds in Good and Poor Flush applications.  The machine is standard with a large (x4) filter filtration system and utilizes (x2) independent CNC controlled high capacity flush pumps that provide double the horsepower for flushing to ensure fast and reliable productivity.  The machine’s standard Pro-Tech Circuit protects the work piece by preventing and minimizing rusting or oxidation from occurring during long hours of unattended operation without the need for costly chemical additives in the water.

Heightened engineering focus has been applied to the U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme design to minimize the cost and impact of machine maintenance.  Several machine components have been designed to simplify maintenance for the operator by minimizing the number of consumable wear items while extending wear part service life.  Features that save time and minimize cost are:

  • Tool-Less Energizer Indexing (Quickly index power contacts precisely without the need for tools or special measuring devices)

  • Wire Guide Removal and Installation without the need for Calibration (The Wire Guides can be removed for cleaning and reinstalled without the need to perform Vertical Alignment Calibration)

  • No Wire Chopper Needed (The Makino pinch roller system cleans and dries the wire before passing through the rear Pinch Rollers.  This prevents wire slippage against the rollers and allows the used wire to lay flat in the collection bin while significantly extending the life of the rollers and bearings, as they are not exposed to the water and abrasive debris.  This also eliminates the additional downtime cost and expense of maintaining a wire chopping device.)

  • Filter Air Purge Function (This eco-friendly system automatically purges the main filters with air to remove the excess pre-conditioned water and weight from the filters before replacement.  It improves safety for the operator by preventing the typical water spillage and slip hazards that are created when replacing filters, and also drastically reduces the weight of the used filter prior to replacement.)

  • Integrated Filter Pressure and Conductivity Monitoring (The Hyper-i control digitally integrates and monitors the filtration pressure and conductivity level of the water, and will prompt the operator to replace these consumable items when necessary.  This eliminates the need for the operator to manually monitor an analogue gauge that can be overlooked and result in machine issues.)

The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme machine layout uses a space-savings design that integrates the di-electrode reservoir into the base casting, which improves the machines thermal stability while minimizing the footprint size.  Work tank access is excellent using the pneumatic raise and fall front door, and allows access to the underside of the work piece or lower machine head even with a large work piece on the 4-sided hardened stainless steel machine table.  The automated work tank door system has a mid-height level function for greater flexibility, and includes a safety features that prevents the door from being lowered when water is in the work tank.

Makino’s Hyper i control is featured on the U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme and delivers intuitive and familiar touch Pinch/Swipe/Drag operations similar to smartphones and tablets, and utilizes a straightforward 3-Step operation process of Program/Setup/Run.  The efficient and user-friendly Hyper-i control interface is standardized for all Makino Wire and RAM EDM machines and streamlines training.  The control is equipped with digital onboard electronic manuals, instructional training videos, and advanced E-Tech Doctor help functions that empower the operator with integrated and convenient resources right at their fingertips. The operator is provided with an effective and commanding view of the control with dual (x2) large 24” class HD touch-screen displays that is further enhanced with a standard mouse and keyboard and full-function advanced Handbox.  The machine comes equipped with the HyperConnect IIoT connectivity package that provides remote machine monitoring functions, and also allows operation of any networked PC software, such as any CAD/CAM software, to be run directly at the machine.

The Hyper-i control interface also includes the Athena voice command operation function as standard content.  The groundbreaking Athena system offers machine voice control capability that assists the operator and augments machine operation to help offset and address industry skillset issues.  Athena’s voice interaction improves operator capability and enhances machine operation of common tasks, and provides convenient processing information to the operator.  No other Wire Electrical Discharge Machine can provide this level of advanced productivity, operational efficiency, and simplified machine interface capability than the Makino U6 H.E.A.T.
